Purpose

Conference paper abstracts/proposals (interchangeable terms for our purposes) occupy a particular crossroads within the broader genre of scholarly writing. While scholarly writing tends to be lengthy, detailed, and peer-reviewed, conference abstracts are none of those. Rather, we might think of conference abstracts as brief, particular, and untested. Brief, because paper abstracts need to distill big ideas into digestible chunks of information. Detailed, because abstracts and proposals are written for an expert reader. Untested, because abstracts do not, by themselves, constitute a genre generally accepted as citable by scholarly writers. In short, conference abstracts meet unique needs for both researchers and discourse communities: they force researchers to concisely summarize their work and articulate how, precisely, that work meets discourse community needs, and they force discourse community members (readers) to filter or gatekeep appropriate inquiry topics.

Assignment

Most academic conferences are organized by scholarly associations and organizations. These organizations sponsor scholarly journals, as well, and typically have host institutions that provide (modest) funding for conference participants. For this project, you will identify a scholarly association or organization that seems relevant to your research inquiry and sponsors a conference or annual meeting. Locate and respond to the relevant call for papers (CFP). Follow the sample abstract handout and meet the reader needs outlined in that document. It might be a good idea to connect your abstract to at least one of the sources you’ve familiarized yourself with through the first few weeks of the course. Include a preliminary list of works cited and works consulted. Your abstract must list at least three works cited and six works consulted. Also important: this is a scholarly writing project, so all sources consulted and cited should be peer-reviewed, scholarly publications.

Notes

A successful conference abstract will demonstrate knowledge of and facility with genre conventions. See the sample abstract handout for a guided reading of a sample abstract. Conference abstracts are more about showing how your work fits into a discourse community than showing how smart you are or how originally you can think. Ultimately, the goal is to contribute an exciting idea that connects to existing research; you’ll do that with the conference paper. First, though, you need to get your idea accepted into the conference; that’s the goal of the conference abstract.
