GALILEO Project Guidelines

Your GALILEO Project will consist of the following steps:

I. First, select a topic related to your major or a special interest subject. (BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION IS MY MAJOR, so choose a special interest topic in this field)

A. For example, if your major is nursing, you will research something related to that field such as SIDS or the Zika Virus. You will not research the field or career.

B. Special interest topic a special interest topic is simply a topic that you find interesting. Special interest topics must be approved by the instructor because some topics are off limits.

II. Next, you will use GALILEO or Credo to search for articles on your topic. You will not use any search engine other than GALILEO or Credo. Once you have found an article on your topic, you will then summarize the article using your own words or paraphrasing.

III. Your summary must thoroughly discuss the important information found in the article. In addition, you will also analyze the article. In your analysis be sure to discuss: how beneficial or informative the article is, what you personally learned from the article, and your overall opinion of the article-do you agree with the information in the article.

A. Your summary must include an MLA bibliography of the article that you summarized. Please see the example.

IIII. Finally you will submit your two-three page summary of the article.

GALILEO Project

The Winds of Change by Maxine Hairston

Summary:

This literary reading discusses a paradigm shift in the teaching of writing. The author references Thomas Kuhn’s thesis on The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. According to Kuhn, when a scientific field is going through a stable period, most of the practitioners in the discipline hold a common belief and they agree on the problems that need to be solved, the rules that govern research and on the standards by which performance is to be measured. Or in other words, they share a paradigm. However, when anomalies arise which cannot be explained by the established model arise, the paradigm begins to show signs of instability. This instability causes innovative thinkers to devise a new model. Of course this paradigm shift will be met with resistance at its onset, but once enough scientists become convinced that the new paradigm solves problems that the traditional paradigm could not solve; they will accept it. Hairston compares this scientific theory to the discipline of writing. In the traditional paradigm, it is believed that competent writers know what they are going to say before they begin to write, writing is linear, and that teaching editing is teaching writing. The new paradigm in teaching writing is based upon twelve principles.

Analysis:

The author of the literary work makes a valid assertion; the old model used to teach students to write is no longer effective. This model does not work for the student that has sub-standard writing skills. I agree that writing is a process and that the instructor should intervene in that process to help students. The instructor should take into account that not all writer know what they are going to write before they write it. Writing can be a discovery process, in which the student learns as he or she writes.
