For this discussion, please choose one chapter from this week’s reading (do NOT choose 8 or 9) to read closely. Once you have read it, write 1-2 sentences about why you chose the chapter you did. Then, describe in detail one concept that you found interesting or helpful. Your goal is to explain that concept so clearly that a peer can understand it and put it into action. If you want to, you can also include a link to a video or some other online explanation of the stylistic or grammatical concept.

Based on the concept that you have written about, create a question that will test your peers’ understanding. Do not use the “To Do” questions from the end of the chapter, although you can refer to them for inspiration. The question can be multiple choice, fill in the blank, or short answer. You can even post a sentence for your peer to revise according to what you have taught.

Instead of traditional responses to this discussion, please choose ONE question to answer. If there is already a response to a post, please move on to the next one.

Here is an example based on a concept that isn’t talked about specifically in the chapter, but that I think is really valuable:

In the reading for this week, I was most interested in participals and participial phrases because I would really like to bring more movement and beauty to my writing. As I read, I learned that participial phrases are one way enhance a sentence by using descriptive language. Participles are phrases that end in -ing or -ed and modify the main subject of the sentence. They can come before or after the main clause, or they can interrupt it.

For example: Instead of writing “I fell to the ground and landed on my back.” I can writing “I fell to the ground, landing on my back.” By using a participial phrase here, the sentence emphasizes the movement of the fall, instead of portraying it as a completed action.

A participial phrase can also appear before the main clause like this: “Clutching the remnants of their past lives, new immigrants struggle to build a new life and a new identity in a new country.”

Here is a great video (Links to an external site.) that explains this in more detail.

Question: Improve the following sentence by adding a participial phrase before, after, or as an interrupter in the main clause. “Children deserve healthier lunches.”

I hope that this little discussion gives each of you ideas and tools for improving your AP!
