Chapter 6 talks about different factors – cultural, social, personal, and psychological that influence consumer behavior. After reading the chapter, discuss why culture is the most basic determinant of a person’s wants and behavior. Then illustrate with an example (do not use examples from the textbook or copy from previous classmates’ posts) to demonstrate how a hospitality business influences the purchase behavior of a particular consumer group. Culture is the most basic determinant of a person’s wants and behaviors because it is the set of basic values that people learn from family and society. Culture is always changing and evolving. Culture has a very big influence on the hospitality and travel industry. It can dictate so many different trends for these business such as food. Lately people are becoming more aware of what they consume and the kinds of things that food contains. People have gone into a health craze and are more concerned with their diets. Vegan diets have become more popular and so have gluten free ones. Trends are also more prominent such as farm to table restaurants. Because of this cultural shift the industry has to take into account what people want and have to be able to satisfy them. More restaurants now offer a larger vegan or gluten free section on their menus.
