Overview

Networks provide a conduit for the exchange of information and resources that can enhance your personal success as well as the survival and success of an entrepreneurial venture. Through networks, entrepreneurs gain access to opportunities and resources, save time, and tap into advice and moral support that may otherwise be unavailable.

The objective of this exercise to gain a better understanding of the importance of networking generally, examine the composition of your current network, and to consider how you might expand your network.

What to Do (and How to Do It):

Prior to beginning work on this discussion, review Chapter 14 in the text and read the article, “Boundaries of Network Ties in Entrepreneurship: How Large is too Large?” (Qian & Kemelgor, 2013).

Complete the following steps:

• You will complete the two forms located in your online classroom, which you will save and attach to your initial post in the discussion forum.
• First, inventory your current network by completing the Networking Assessment Form.
• Discuss your assessment of your current network to include:
  • Composition of your network—what observations do you have?
  • Are there any particular patterns?
  • What is the composition of men and women in your network?
  • How often do you ask for help?
  • Do you see opportunity for building your network?
• Second, to examine how you might expand your network, complete each of the entries in the Network Development Form.
• Discuss your assessment of your network development opportunities to include:
  • Which of the five people listed do you think would be the most helpful to you in advancing your venture?
  • In what form would their assistance be most valuable? As a partner? As an advisor? Financing? Advertising?
  • How will you seek to gain their assistance? What do you think will inspire them to join your network?
• Post your responses to the Interactivity 1: Strategic Networking Plus discussion forum and attach your two documents by Day 3.
• View the discussion posts, and reply to at least two classmates by Day 7.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of their networks for supporting a business venture.
  • What recommendations would you offer for strengthening their networks?
