Chapter 6 of your textbook, you learn about the autonomic nervous system (ANS) and how it contributes to criminal behavior (Refer to pages 154-159). The ANS is part of the peripheral nervous system and it serves a vital role regulating the body’s internal functions in accordance with environmental changes. Essentially, the ANS keeps the body in a state of biological balance (e.g., shivering, sweating, adjusting pupil size). In addition, it plays an important role in the development of human conscience through the process of classical conditioning (Refer to pages 255-256). Based on what you have read, answer the following questions:
1.How could an under responsive ANS affect learning?
2.Going back to what you learned about deterrence, how does the ANS nullify or strengthen the deterrent effects of punishment?
3.How does this interaction between the ANS and classical conditioning inhibit deviant or criminal behavior or fail to restrain it? Give some examples.
4.Also, reflect back on the theories of social boding and self-control you learned in Chapter 9 and speculate on how a hyper-responsive (over aroused) ANS might impact those theories.
5.Finally, think of how you learned the social emotions of shame and guilt. How did you develop those emotions? What external actions (i.e., your parents’ disapproval) prompted an internal biological response (i.e., a sick feeling in your gut)? In what ways did this process shape the development of your conscience?
Can you see how an under aroused ANS can led to psychopathy? Does that connection make sense?
This answer should be at least 300 words in length. A paragraph should be a minimum of three complete sentences.
