1. Selection of the Art Object (This artist has been assigned to you after submitting a ranking of 5 artists to yr professor. Please do not pick a different artist. Make sure you artist is approved before proceeding. (Your assigned artist is in your grade book.) Pick a representational work of art by your assigned artist.

Directions: The assignment asks you to repeat that which you had done for Preparatory Formal Analysis Written Exercise #2 with one difference, the choice of another representational painting is completely yours to make. (The same artist will serve in Formal Analyses 3-5 and for the final you will choose a different work of art for LP8.)

Using the textbook (or another source, even off the Internet, if you like), choose any colored reproduction of a representational (any art that reproduces reality with little or no change or distortion) art object as the subject. Please do not choose an abstract or non-represenational work! You must send the instructor a link to your chosen work of art or must attach it in your mail message or your Word document.

Remember (and I cannot stress this enough): The painting (and artist) that you pick for Formal Analyses Exercises 3-5 (Assignments 9, 12 and 15) will be help you gather all the material you need for your final paper. If you complete these exercises thoroughly, your final paper, though based on a different work of art by your artist, will shape up really well!

1. Line: A black outline is used by the artist to separate the colors of the face. There are contour lines around the edge of his face. In the background there is a horizontal line separating the sky from the earth. Also, there is an implied line (line of sight) coming from his eyes looking right at the viewer. There are curvy and diagonal lines in the branches of the trees.

An Example:
1.Balance: When I drop a vertical line down the center of my selected painting, the visual weight of the work is concentrated on one side. Because the left side of the painting is populated and the right side has more empty (negative) space it is asymmetrical. There is much more happening on the left side than the right. This sense of asymmetry is furthered through the intense colors on the left side as opposed to the muted colors on the right side.
