Instructions Summary: Respond to one of the assigned readings from a causal analysis perspective. Begin with a question. For instance, after reading “Black Mothers Keep Dying After Giving Birth. Shalon Irving’s Story Explains Why,” you may straightforwardly ask, “What is the main cause of infant mortality in the US?” Alternatively, and more critically, you may reasonably ask, “Why are black women particularly affected by this epidemic?”

To answer this question, I would need to decide whether I am doing the main cause or root cause method. Here is how I might do this:

After doing some research, I decide that 1 and 3 are not really real causes. I could discuss these in paragraphs 1 and 2, but I won’t provide them a lot of credence. Instead, I might use research to debunk those ideas.

My paper will then argue why poverty matters so much and how it affects health and everything else.

Root Cause

“Drill Deep” – The article helps me do this.

1. Generally worse health

Then ask, “Why is this happening among African Americans especially?”

2. Many may think poverty, but that’s only part of it. Recent research suggests it is related to stress in life.

Then ask, “Why do African American women have more stress than women of other racial backgrounds?

3. Pressure by society either through racism, competition to gain success, or environmental factors.

Note how the Root Cause “drills” deep in order to find meaningful causes. The example in the text shows how it wasn’t just poverty or lack of access to healthcare, something many may immediately blame.
