Assignment: Negotiating Secondary Sources

For this assignment, you need to choose just one of the pieces you’ve read this week. Choose whichever source you feel most comfortable writing about–that’s more important than choosing your favorite. Once you’ve chosen the source that you want to work with, your assignment is to write a short, three paragraph essay in which you address some of the most important parts of the piece. In the first paragraph, you will be finding and analyzing the thesis statement, in the second paragraph you will be finding, locating and commenting on the citation of research and in the third paragraph, you will make your own claim about the relationship between the piece you’ve chosen and Frankenstein.

Before we begin with the assignment, here’s a short reminder about the key elements of thesis statements, since you’ll be looking for the thesis in the essay you’re analyzing:

A thesis statement is the central aspect of an academic essay. In student papers, it should typically occur at the bottom of the introductory paragraph. In other kinds of essays (like those you’ve been assigned to read this week) it can appear anywhere. The thesis statement clarifies the essay’s purpose, outlining what is going to be argued and why it will be argued. Because it has so much to accomplish, the thesis statement usually runs from between 2-5 sentences. In order to be complete, the thesis statement needs to fulfill three criteria: it needs to be limited, arguable and unique.

  • The thesis statement needs to be limited so that the essay does not cover more than it is capable given the space allotted to it.
  • The thesis statement needs to be arguable so that it can continue the conversation about the topic it addresses.
  • The thesis statement needs to be unique so that it is not covering an area of thinking that has already been covered.

Now, on to the assignment:

  • In the first paragraph, I want you to identify what you see as the thesis of the essay you’ve chosen. First, write it down word for word with quotation marks to show where it begins and ends. Next, explain to the reader what it means. Then in the last part of the paragraph explain why you think this is the main argument of the essay. If you make a good case for your selection, I’m not going to take points off, no matter what you choose as the thesis. Just be sure that you are writing sincerely, and you are really trying to identify the main argument of the essay.
  • After you’ve finished the first paragraph, write a second paragraph in which you identify one place in the essay where the author refers to a secondary source. Use your writing in this paragraph to explain the situation–where does the citation occur and what is the author’s purpose in identifying the source. Is he/she analyzing it? If so, what does the author have to say about it? If not what is he/she saying about it? And most importantly, how does the author’s use of this source support his/her thesis?
  • Finally, in a third paragraph, explain how this source might be used to better understand Frankenstein. What is there in this source that would be useful to a person writing about Frankenstein? Which passages are the most relevant and why?
