7 2 discussion repeated measures

Create an example of a research design that would call for a repeated measures ANOVA. Be sure to describe the research question, the independent variable(s), the levels of the independent variable(s), and the dependent variables. In your discussion, mention ways that the research question could have been answered using a between-subjects design.

When responding to your classmates, provide your perspective on repeated measures designs and discuss other research designs that could have been used to answer the research question.

AFTER COMPLETING THE INITIAL POST, PLEASE ALSO RESPOND TO THE FOLLOWING TWO STUDENTS BELOW REGARDING THE SAME TOPIC!

STUDENT ONE:

A research design for a repeated-measures study could be set up like this, I want to find out whether lighting will affect students performance in a test-taking situation. Therefore to begin my research question will be just that, is test-taking performance affected by different types of lighting? For this example, there will be 30 participants. The first lighting set will be your typical fluorescent lights, the second lighting set will be full spectrum led lighting, and finally a third lighting set will be used comprised of lights that fall somewhere in between fluorescent and full spectrum. The participants will begin by taking a simple test under the fluorescent lights and then a week later will take the same test under the full-spectrum lights, and finally a week later under the third lighting type. The independent variable in the design is the type of lighting, the independent variable has three levels. The dependent variable in this scenario is the test.

When thinking about how this research would be a between-subjects design I would most likely want to try and obtain more participants because now I will have to randomly assign participants to each separate lighting group and run them in that condition only.

STUDENT TWO:

A repeated measures ANOVA can be used when comparing subjects during the same test, multiple times. If one wanted to design an experiment using a repeated measures ANOVA, an example research question could be: are students more stressed before, during, or after test taking compared to their test scores? In this example the dependent variable would be the student test scores. The independent variables, student stress levels, could be recorded by having the students conduct a stress survey. This survey would be administered three times (before, during, and after the test) creating three levels for the independent variables. Additionally, this experiment could look at subject from different class levels so not only would the experiment be designed to compare within-subjects’ (one subjects’ before, during, and after scores) but also between-subjects’ by comparing freshman to seniors.
