6 weeks worth of discussion posts for a global hip hop class

Answer these questions in at least 150 words. I do not have the articles.

1. Is it possible for hip hop/rap to “fully develop” in a social/political climate where discussion of race is considered taboo such as in Cuba or Brazil? Use the Osumare text to support your answer.

2. Has the commodification of rap limited it’s impact as a vehicle for global social change and resistance? Why or Why not?

3. The film “Homegrown: Hip Life in Ghana” demonstrates the transnational appeal of hip hop and the desire for Africans to make hip hop their own. Did the rap group VIP embrace Hip Life as a symbol of their cultural heritage or did they primarily assume African American performance?

4. Hip hop can be a powerful tool in politics. Why would the United Nations and other governing agencies sponsor hip hop summits and award ceremonies? Do you believe these actions to be sincere or self-serving?

5. Based on the article for this week, explain how do French immigrant youth use hip-hop to forge their identities in France. What are some of the challenges they face?

6. In what ways does the film, La Haine, illustrate some of the challenges faced by immigrant youth in Paris? Choose a scene or two that describe these challenges.

7. In Part 3 of the movie “Slingshot Hip-Hop” one of the rappers states that “hip-hop is like a weapon”. He asserts that the velocity (of the weapon) depends on where you come from. What does he mean by this? Give at least 2 examples citing the text and the movie.

8. In the article “Hip-hop Education and Palestine Solidarity”, authors Knopf Newman and Marcy Jane make comparisons of Palestine to the Nazi Germany holocaust persecution of Jews and to the neglect and criminalization of African Americans during the Katrina hurricane in New Orleans. Are these fair analogies? Why or why not?

9. The article for week 8 described hip hop as a weapon. This week’s reading makes several references to hip hop and spirituality? Can hip hop be described as a spiritual movement? Why or why not?

10. In the movie, “I Love Hip Hop in Morocco” on of the rappers repeatedly used the “N” word. Do you agree with his use of the “N” word for Moroccans? How did he justify its use?
