read carefully! 3 seperate documents!

Project Overview

You are to interview a command level supervisor within a criminal justice organization about a policy that might need to be written concerning on-the-job decisions by employees. (Policy areas might be use of force, consumption of alcohol, etc.) You then write a policy paper based on the interview and further writing and research. The overall intent of the project is to introduce you to real issues within a criminal justice agency as well as to give you practical experience in preparing a piece of “work management” that is often required by leaders in criminal justice.

The final piece of the project is to develop a policy for a criminal justice agency in the area of employee decisions. Examples are employee use of force, employee alcohol use off duty, professional conduct on or off duty, seatbelt use while driving the organization’s vehicle car, and so on. The policy is important because if employees make a bad decision, it could have a negative impact on the organization.

first part: label the running head and title ….. policy topic selection. The first step of your course project is for you to select a policy topic. A policy is meant to be a course of action, guide, or procedure written to address a specific problem or issue. It is important that you review a few examples of policies prior to conducting your interview. For a sample policy, search the Internet or contact your local criminal justice agency. An example policy has also been provided for you below:

Week 01 Course Project Sample Policy

For this phase of the course project, write a 1 page maximum overview of your policy topic selection. Be sure to include the following in your submission:

  • Title of policy topic
  • Explanation of why the topic interests you.
  • What challenges are currently faced in the implementation of this policy

Keep in mind that your topic needs to be related to some aspect of the criminal justice profession. Your policy topic must be approved by your instructor.

SECOND PART”………… label this part of assignment in running head and title ….. interview scheduling narratives

For this phase of the project, set up your interview with a command level supervisor within a criminal justice organization. Command level supervisors might be police captains, assistance chiefs, chiefs, deputy sheriff lieutenants, correction captains, probation managers, or any other criminal justice organization manager at the higher levels of the organization.

Reminder your interview will be due in module

Step 1 – Make the Contact

Make calls to find a command level supervisor or manager to interview.

Ideas for what to communicate during your call:

  • Explain that you are a student taking a course in criminal justice leadership and management. You have been asked to interview a criminal justice supervisor or manager as part of a special course project.
  • Inform the potential interviewee that your assignment is to develop a policy for a criminal justice agency in the area of employee decisions. Examples are employee use of force, employee alcohol use off duty, professional conduct on or off duty, seatbelt use while driving the organization’s vehicle car, and so on. The policy is important because if employees make a bad decision, it could have a negative impact on the organization.
  • You are only asking for 30 minutes to interact with the supervisor about your policy assignment.

Step 2 -Mail (E-Mail) a Letter

Prepare and mail or e-mail a confirmation letter to the supervisor summarizing your phone conversation. Keep the letter or email as a Word document on your computer to turn in to your instructor.

Alternate Activity. If for some reason you are unable to conduct a live interview, be sure to obtain your instructor’s approval for an alternate activity. This might be a phone or email interview or some other “interview equivalent” on the Internet.

If you are approved by your instructor to complete the alternative interview, you must complete a verbatim script of the interview with both the interview questions and the interviewee’s responses.

Submit your completed assignment to the drop box below. Please check the Course Calendar for specific due dates.

Save your assignment as a Microsoft Word document. (Mac users, please remember to append the “.docx” extension to the filename.) The name of the file should be your first initial and last name, followed by an underscore and the name of the assignment, and an underscore and the date. An example is shown below:

PART THREE!!!! label this part of the running head and title ,, interview questions

For this section of the course project, you will create and submit your interview questions to your instructor prior to conducting the interview. These will be the questions that you will ask your interviewee during the interview. Your instructor will critique the questions to make sure they are relevant to your particular topic and will also make suggestions on how to improve them.

  • You should have a minimum of 10 interview questions for this assignment.
  • Make sure that you ask open ended questions trying to stay away from yes/no answer questions as they will not provide you with detailed information.
